Author- Freida Mcfadden Star Review- 4.5
Quick Summary: (Without Spoiler)
In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie is back with a new job and another dark household mystery to uncover. This time, she’s hired by the Garricks–a seemingly perfect couple living in a luxury penthouse. But something doesn’t sit right. Douglas Garrick insists his wife is ill and must not be disturbed. Millie begins to suspect something sinister is going on behind closed doors, and once again is determined to uncover the truth. What she discovers is far more disturbing than she could have imagined.
What I liked:
*Fast-paced, twisty plot: Freida McFadden keeps the suspense high with short-chapters and unexpected turns that make the book hard to put down.
*Millie as a character: Her courage and determination add grit to the story, and fans of the first book will enjoy her continued development.
*Strong Psychological tension: The way the author builds fear and uncertainty, especially around the mysterious Mrs. Garrick, is compelling and chilling.
* Big Reveal Moment: Just when you think you’ve figured this whole story out, the story flips the script–not just once, but several times.
What Could Be Improved:
*Some plot twists felt over-the-top: While surprising, a few twists stretch believability and feel a bit too convenient.
*Repetitive Elements: If you’ve read the first book, some of the set-up and structure may feel familiar or formulaic.
Secondary Characters: A few side characters could’ve been fleshed out more to raise the stakes or emotional impact.
Final Thoughts:
The Housemaid’s Secret delivers a gripping, binge worthy psychological thriller with the signature Freida McFadden flair–secrets, lies, and a heroine you’ll root for. While it leans into some familiar tropes, the addictive storytelling and shocking reveals make it a satisfying and entertaining sequel to The Housemaid. Therre is also plenty of gasp-worthy moments!
